Pastel has a vibrant quality that promotes realistic facial detail like no other media. It is a media that has gained the recognition that it deserves in the modern art world.  The big advantage is that it does not fade, yellow, or crack with age as oil paintings do. Pastels have been used since the 16th century and were the favorite medium of many recognized artists such as, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Millet, Renoir, LaTrec and Degas. I was at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and viewed a pastel portrait that was done by DaVinci about 1600 and it looked like it had been completed yesterday.

Pastels are delicate and must be handled carefully until framed behind glass. I suggest a good quality frame with museum glass to avoid glare, and a mat between the glass and the painting.                                                       I have been able to ship my pastel portraits in special containers and they all arrive without any problems.
