What makes your portrait style special? I have studied the old masters all my life and I believe their techniques are still superior. The goal is to produce an exceptional portrait every time. I refuse to use any form of digital enhancement. My style is a tribute to their honesty and craftsmanship.

How long does it take you?

In this style of art patience is a virtue. A sepia sketch takes several hours A graphite (pencil) can take several days … depending on size A colour pastel can take up to a week An acrylic can easily take over a week Often I have a backlog of commissions so the actual painting time can vary. This type of art cannot be rushed.

Why do you use Acrylic, not oils?

The old masters were limited by oil paints. My only concession to modern technology is acrylic paint. It just has so many advantages...especially the drying time and endurance. They do not crack or fade with age as oils do.

Why do you use pastels?

Pastels are older than even oil paint. Their colour is more dynamic than oils and they never fade. I have seen a pastel portrait by Leonardo da Vinci in the Smithonian Institute, It is from the 1600's and is as brilliant as if it was completed yesterday. Many of the impressionist painters also preferred pastels to oil paint. I used to work in soft pastel but now I use pastel pencils that give me a real advantage over most portrait artists still using soft pastels.

Why do you use graphite pencils?

Charcoal produces a similar effect but can be very messy and delicate. The pencil gives me tight control over details and shading. Many clients prefer the simplicity and power of a monochromatic painting.

Why are your prices so low?

Current published prices are only temporary. Due to client demand I am considering raising my prices by 25% in the near future.

Some sites promise rapid delivery and you do not. Why?

There are many mercenary portrait sites that exploit a stable of third world country artists who remain nameless. The quality of artwork can vary from terrible to very good. I promise consistency of high quality art...and this takes time. These poor artists are under a deadline for 2 week or sooner delivery and it shows in the quality of work. I do not promise rapid delivery...but I will make priorities of works with a deadline. You will receive a documentation of authenticity by me. The other sights do not even name the artist involved.
